Saturday 16 August 2003, an evening with Dale Watson in Klaaswaal (also Sunday 17 August in Amsterdam)

An evening with Dale Watson turned into a night with Dale Watson & The Lone Stars.... and what a night!
Maybe I should have named this site People I've met, Places I've been. Because where ever we go we meet these nice people, and the places would have not been the same without them.
On Saturday 16 August 2003 we went to Newland in Klaaswaal.
Klaaswaal is a small town some 20 kms south of Rotterdam.
Reason for us to go there?.... To see a concert of Dale Watson & the Lone Stars.
It is just a few months ago that my colleague Adri introduced me to the Music of Dale and I fell in love with his voice from minute one. Dale has this special country style that touches you real deep inside, just like Elvis, Johnny Cash or Jim Reeves will do. But the again Dale has this special sound in his voice that puts him aside of other singers.
Then, some days after my colleague spoke about Dale and I had heard his songs for the first time, I got an e-mail form "De Plaatboef" announcing his concert in Amsterdam in "De Hollandse Manege" on the 17th but that concert was sold out. So we decided to go to Newland in Klaaswaal. We booked a ticket and a room by e-mail.
I must say Newland is a very nice place to go. The have this very nice staff that is friendly and hospitable. Also they serve good food (even for me being a vegetarian) and good drinks. If you happen to come from far away you can book a hotel room for the night (that's what we did).

The concert hall of Newland is such that you can go up towards the stage and be in contact with the performer and the other way around.
And that is what happened during the performance of Dale Watson. He is the kind of singer that will sing the songs you want to hear and he himself has great fun singing them for you. As it was 16 August he sang several Elvis songs, which, in my opinion, Dale does excellently.
But it was not just a concert like many others were you see the singer for 1 or maybe 2 hours. No this concert went on from 21.00 hours (as planned and not 30 or more minutes late like some performing artists will do) up until 02.00 next morning! The band and Dale had just one 20 minutes break during this concert!
After the concert finally was over Dale came over to meet his fans and the other band members mixed with the crowd having a talk and a beer.
If ever Dale Watson and the Lone stars hit a place nearby you, be sure to go and see him! It is more then worth your while!

Thank you Dale for this wonderful evening and also the staff of Newland, well done!

For info on country music in Holland see the site's of De Plaatboef (get on their mail list) and Alt Country.

Dale Watson plays on an Australian made Tomkins guitar. And me being an Aussie, it makes me kind a proud,

What a wonderful surprise, we went to the concert at "De Hollandse Manege" in Amsterdam
After our wonderful evening with Dale Watson and the Lone Stars, we went to have a breakfast. To our surprise we found the complete band and crew having a breakfast as well. The only 2 set places were at their table so we asked if we could join them.
Hospitable as he is, Dale kindly invited us to their table and so we had breakfast together.
I must say after such a long night all the crew was amazingly fit and making jokes about what one special person (lets call him John) had been up to but could not quite remember.
We expressed our admiration of the wonderful performance they had given and talked about this that and the other. We seemed to get on quite well and it seems as a spark flew over between us, almost as if we were long lost friends. Also I explained that the only reason we had come all the way form Amsterdam to see them in Klaaswaal was that 'De Hollandse Manege' in Amsterdam was sold out.
Then Dale said that he would try and get us in, in Amsterdam. And so at about 18.00 hours Dale called us at home telling us we could see their appearance in Amsterdam!
You can imagine that we were thrilled to pieces and hurried over to De Manege as they would start at about 20.00 hours!
Fortunately we were there quite early so we had some time to make acquaintance with the members of the band an also with Rocky (he comes for France and drove the band through Europe).
Well folks I can assure you we had a wonderful evening again. Unfortunately for us they had to leave for USA very early next day so they could not go on all night, but had to stop at 23.30 hours. I also bought his wonderful CD "Every Song I Write For You" which Dale dedicated after the show was over. So after the show we again had a chance to have a beer and a chat with Don, Gene, Gary and Dale.
So in two days we had the wonderful experience to see two concerts of Dale Watson & The Lone Stars.
Well Dale, Don, Gene and Gary, thank you all very much for those two wonderful evenings!
We now have set our hearts on going to Austin Texas some were next year so we hope to see you there!
